In the last post we learned about filtration systems, types of filters and reverse osmosis. To wrap this up I will share about the Bottled waters in this post. Wheeww! Lots of information, I hope you find useful. ;)
Reminder: Good water to drink is some filtered waters with an added alkaline based water. Beware of bottled water!
When buying bottled water read the labels. Why?
The FDA only requires that bottled water be as safe as TAP water. [eeww] Tap water is regulated by the EPA. Most cities are required to check water everyday. FDA requires water to be tested 1 time [1x] a year for cryptosporidium and giardia. Bottled water companies do not. [In 1999 a hundred of most popular brand of bottled water was tested. The test showed that a third contained arsenic, trihalomethanes, bacteria or other contaminents. 1/5 contained man-made chemicals and one contained phthalate at twice the level acceptable in tap ater. 2 had high levels of fluoride and 2 others had coliform bacteria. If you think bottled water is lead free, think again! Dr. Colbert notes the FDA allows bottled water to contain up to 5 parts per billion of lead or a 1/3 of what is permitted in TAP water.]
What are most bottled waters made from?
Most bottled waters are made from a form of plastic called PET or PETE [which stands for polyethylene terephthalate- is a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family and is used in synthetic fibers; beverage, food and other liquid containers; thermoforming applications; and engineering resins often in combination with glass fiber.] This kind of plastic is considered safer then PVC, but has been shown to leach plasticizer chemicals called phthalates. So we see that bottled water carries an ingredient called Plastacizers. [dispersants are additives that increase the plasticity or fluidity of the material to which they are added; these include plastics, cement, wallboard, and clay] Which carries an ingredient called Phthalates [are esters of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity). They are primarily used to soften polyvinyl chloride. ] Phthalates are the number 1 polutant in the entire body. It damages our developement and intelligence, damages DHA and metabolism - which is most important fatty acid for brain function. [Many experts believe this may be why our children are not reaching intelligence of their parents and grandparents.] Fatty acids surround 60 million cells through out our body, also creates inflamation and sets stage for cancer. These bottles tend to be good if the water is drank with in a few months of the expiration date, used only once and then discarded.
**Safest bottled waters to drink from : Pet, Pete, or bioplastics - Which has to be labeled on the bottle before the sell of the water.**
Fairly easy to avoid bad plastics because consumers must label the bottle type. You can find out the type of plastic bottled water is made from by following this label system below:
1. PET or PETE: used to bottle soda, most bottled water, cooking oil, juice, salad dressing, peanut butter, and other foods.
2. HDPE: Milk jugs, once-gallon water bottles, some bottled food
3. PVC : cling wraps, Reynolds Wrap, Stretch-tite, Freeze-tite (used by many grocery stores for meats) four-ounce Wesson Cooking Oil, Appalachian Mountain Spring water, some plastic squeezes bottles.
4. LDPE: food storage bags [like Glad and Ziploc bags]
5. PP : deli soup containers, most Rubbermaid containers, cloudy plasticbaby bottles, ketchup bottles, other cloudy plastic bottles.
6. PS : styrofoam, some disposable plastic cups and bowls, and most opaque plastic cutlery.
7. 'Other' resins, usually polycarbonate, which contains bisphenol A: most plastic baby bottles, five-gallon water bottles, clear plastic "sippy" cups, some types of clear plastic cutlery, inner lining food cans.
8. PLA- bioplastic called polylactic acid.
**Drink more water out of Glass bottles or glass containers!**
**Can not stress the importance to NOT reuse plastic bottle containers:
To paint the picture: If the water in the reused plastic container was tested we would find that even city facilities would NOT use this water. IT is worse then TAP water! - If the city wont use it, why in the world are we?**
Where does bottled water come from?
Would you believe that bottled water comes from reprocessed TAP water! 2 of the biggest brands of bottled water that are made from reprocessed TAP water are: Dansani & Aquafina, [their scource is the Detroit River] In fact it is noted that about 1/4 of bottled water is made from TAP water that is reprocessed. There are over 3,000 brands of bottled water. [ To find out more you can visit the following noted sites: www.aquamaestro.com and www.mineralwaters.org. ]
Penta Water is one of the best bottled waters on market today. [Dr. Colbert uses and refers this water best for patients with Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, headaches, arthritis, and most digenerative disease disorders. Usually recommending 2 [16 oz] bottles of Penta water a day along with 1 or 2 quarts of pure spring water.] The other big problem with bottled water is PLASTIC. Studies show today how dangerous plastic really is. The worst plastic anything is plastic made with (PVC) or Polyvinyl Choloride. (PVC) is known as a carconigen that emits pollutants from the moment it is created and until long after it is discarded. Studies show (PVC) leaches vinyl chloride and other pollutants, thus disrupting the hormonal balance causing fertility problems and damaging cells, tissues and organs. An other common ingredient in plastics is called bisphenol A, which is used in reuseable water bottles. It can change course of fetal development and cause abnormal chromosome loss or gain, which leads to miscarriage or disorders like Down syndrome, also linked to obesity. Nalgene water bottles - brightlt colored, hard plastic, reusable water bottles- and 5 gallonbottles also have bisphenol A in them. [Studies showed that chemical leaches in to water at room temperature.]
READ the BOTTLES LABEL and also look at the MINERAL Content on the bottle. Better water is with magnesium [at leat 90 mg of magnesium per liter] and Low sodium [less then 10mg per liter]
Great site of resource you can visit the (IBWA) International Bottled Water Association - to see if any bottled water is below the FDA standards. [ www.bottledwater.org You can also see which bottled water is a memeber of the (IBWA.)]

How to store your water?
Never put your water in the garage, shed, or in direct sunlight. ALWAYS store water away from cleaning compounds, (paint, gasoline and other household industrial chemicals) Best to store water in refrigerator if possible to retard bacteria growth on in a dark cool place.
Next week I will post the next chapter of this study. I hope you have found these posts on WATER useful. Have a blessed day!
